How to flip the image on the monitor

The need to flip the image displayed on the monitor occurs quite often: when working with some graphics settings, in games, while reading, or if you just accidentally pressed a key combination, and now you don’t know how to fix the situation. The built-in capabilities of modern operating systems allow you to use several solutions at once.

How can I flip the image on the monitor

This article addresses the issue of settings only for laptops and desktop computers, when using mobile devices, refer to the recommendations of their manufacturer.

Using keyboard shortcut

The most common and easiest way to rotate the image on the monitor when using the Windows operating system is using the keyboard. Provided that in the “Desktop” settings the switching functionality by a key combination has not been previously disabled, the image is rotated 90 degrees by the combination of Ctrl + Alt + arrow (right or left, depending on where the displayed image is to be rotated).

Important! If there is a need to immediately turn 180 degrees, then you need to use the same combination with the down key. All keys must be pressed at a time!

If the combination doesn’t work for some reason, then you must definitely return the settings by pressing Ctrl + Alt + F8. If this did not work, or you have a different operating system, read the methods below.

Some laptop models and built-in utilities allow you to enable or disable the screen rotation control using the keys through their settings. In particular, such functionality is available for the Compaq Mini. In this case, it is necessary to check the settings of these utilities in case of difficulties arising when using the hot keys.

Using the capabilities of the operating system

For Windows, the easiest way is to get to the required capabilities by right-clicking on the free space of the "Desktop", then select "Screen Settings", "Display". Too complicated steps to turn the picture on the monitor, it is not necessary.

Attention! Some outdated monitor models may not be detected automatically, therefore, before applying the settings, you should find them manually using the display settings. The very possibility of a search will be offered by the system automatically.

In the menu that opens, select the screen orientation you need and save the settings. They should apply immediately. This tip applies to Windows 10.

Depending on the version of the Windows operating system, the name and appearance of the menu may vary slightly. Do not be afraid, all versions of this system inherit the logic of the basic settings from each other, so following it, you can use the tips on any version of the operating system.

For earlier versions of Windows, starting with the seventh, the necessary settings are in the context menu according to the words "Screen Settings", then select "Orientation". This menu is also searched through the use of "Start", where you can go to the "Control Panel" and find the item "Screen". Both of these settings are identical.

The so-called "book" view mode means rotate 90 degrees, to rotate the image 180 degrees, select the "landscape" display mode. The inverted adjective used in the settings means literally that the image will be displayed in this format "upside down", this setting is similar to pressing hot keys from the previous method with the left arrow.

Or, alternatively, you can use the item "Graphics Settings" by selecting "Flip" in the opened submenu. If such parameters are not needed, then everything must be returned.

To find out the model and version of the video card used, you need to click "Start" and type dxdiag in the input line, then press Enter. A built-in diagnostic utility opens, which provides a list of all the equipment installed in the system. The necessary parameters are located on the "Screen" ("Monitor") tab. Knowing the model and version of the video card, if necessary, you can update or reinstall the video driver from the manufacturer's website.

For an even earlier version, XP, it is possible to change the monitor settings by using the functionality of the video card installed in the system. You need to find the tray icon, usually for NVidia or Radeon video cards it has a characteristic appearance, and then right-click on it. The settings menu appears, with the screen rotation option available for change.

Sometimes, during a change in orientation, the taskbar hides. This is due to the logic of using the image by the operating system. If this happens, you should open the panel properties (by right-clicking on its area), and uncheck the option for automatically hiding the panel.

Other ways to flip the image on the monitor

Other methods of changing the orientation of the image of the "Desktop" include working directly with the settings of the video card. This method is preferable, for example, if you use an external monitor connected to your portable device.

By clicking on the "Desktop", you can select the item "Graphic Characteristics" or "Graphics Settings", or "Video Card Control Panel", which often also have a characteristic favicon (small image) of the brand of the video card manufacturer (Intel, NVidia, AMD). In the graphic or context menu that opens, you should next select one of the ready-made options for the rotation angle, and, if necessary, adjust the scaling or resolution.

Important! If during the settings they themselves change back all the time, or none of the methods described above helps, the possibility of viruses in the operating system should be excluded. Download the antivirus using an uninfected system and check it. If possible, the anti-virus utility should be used from the CD-ROM, since installation on an already infected system will most likely not lead to the desired effect. For users who are in the domain (most often at the workplace in the office), changing these settings can also be prohibited by the domain policy, in which case you should contact the company's system administrator for a solution to the problem.

For NVidia or AMD cards, it is often necessary to take an additional step by choosing the Display intermediate menu between the setting itself and the main menu item.

The exact name of the item depends on the version and model of the card. Before making the settings, it is recommended to update the video driver to the latest version, this will reduce the likelihood of glitches. It is also recommended that you try reinstalling the driver if the parameter settings for some unknown reason do not work, and the anti-virus scan failed.

When using operating systems other than the Windows family, it is necessary to use the configuration file settings, restarting after that the graphical shell. The options required to enable the rotation mode depend on the type and version of the system, as well as the graphic card itself.
