How to solder headphone wires

Headphones and various headsets have become an integral part of everyday life. Almost every inhabitant of the planet has them. People use them for entertainment, watching their favorite movies, listening to music of famous artists of all time. This device also helps to quickly resolve business issues and keep in touch with other users.

Thanks to modern developments, technology becomes better, providing high-quality communication to all spheres of human activity. Recently, developers have focused on wireless models of devices to create the most comfortable conditions. This option has its advantages and disadvantages.

In our article, we will consider early versions of headphones. Unfortunately, wired models had one very significant drawback and weakness - the connection of wires. They are often frayed at the folds and fly out of the inside of the liner. In this case, it is necessary to replace the equipment.

But each time to buy a new headset will cost a lot of money, so we offer to learn how to repair them. In order to restore the wire, you need to properly solder it. We will talk about this in our article.

IMPORTANT: If the equipment was inexpensive, you can purchase a new version. However, for expensive headphones, repair will be much cheaper than a complete replacement.

Work with electronics has always been and remains a difficult process. Care should be taken in its implementation and follow all safety instructions. In order to complete everything quickly and correctly, it is necessary to purchase equipment for soldering in a specialized store. To carry out repairs at home, you may need the following tools and materials:

  • Directly the soldering iron itself.
  • Current source for connection.
  • Solder for soldering surfaces of dangling wires.
  • Flux for removal of oxides and better adhesion of the material. You can apply rosin.
  • Stationery or ordinary sharp knife for stripping wire.
  • You may need a new plug or part of the wire to replace the damaged area.
  • Multimeters to detect the source of the malfunction.
  • Insulation tape.

Prepare the equipment and the workplace in advance where you will make repairs. It is better to choose a spacious place with the smallest accumulation of foreign objects in order to prevent the possibility of fire and damage to things during the operation of the soldering iron.

After you have prepared everything necessary for the work and found a suitable place for this, you can proceed to the main stage. The principle of operation is clear to everyone, the most important point is accuracy and accuracy in the process of soldering. For understanding, we give a description of the step-by-step implementation of all actions for self-repair of headphones:

  1. The first step is to determine the source of the problem and the amount of work. There are two methods to do this: inspection and probing of the cable along the entire length and checking with special equipment (multimeter). The second option is used for hidden defects that cannot be examined externally and palpated.
  2. After detecting damage, cut this segment with a knife.
  3. At one end, remove the rubber sheath and spread the wires to the sides. Depending on the model, there may be a different number of them, all of them are painted in different colors for convenience. Do the same manipulations with the other part of the wire.
  4. Now remove the insulation coating from each core and burn all the wires with a fire to remove the varnish layer so that the solder holds well and provides good conductivity. It is necessary to ignite each vein.
  5. Then solder all the cores in accordance with each other, it is recommended to start with a common wire, and then go to the channel parts.
  6. Allow the soldering area to cool and test the headset by plugging the plug into the jack and turning on the music. If there are flaws in the work, then the soldering went bad or did not work correctly, try to correct the flaws and check the work again.
  7. If everything works, you can close the soldering point with insulating tape to prevent shorting.

IMPORTANT: Be careful when working with electrical wires while soldering. If you are not confident in your abilities, simply purchase a new headset or entrust the work to professionals, as improper repair can even further damage the equipment.

The troubleshooting method for an open area of wire was previously described. In the event that the cable is damaged inside the speaker or close to the plug, the action plan will be slightly changed.

  1. You also determine where repairs are needed. And strip this wiring section.
  2. After that, carefully disassemble the plug or speaker. Parts must be prepared in advance for replacement.
  3. Once you have stripped the wires and removed the braid, you must thread them through the new plug, otherwise after soldering you will not be able to insert them inside.
  4. All other actions are performed as described above.
  5. Additionally, after soldering, you can tie a small knot in the plug to prevent the wire from running freely and to avoid further grinding during operation.

TIP: Keep the warranty, it will provide you with free repair and maintenance of the device.

With independent attempts to repair, the warranty card will become invalid, so do not rush. First contact your service center. There you will be provided with qualified assistance and the product will be repaired.
