DIY metal bookcase

One of the most popular metal structures, which is found both in production and in everyday life, is a metal rack.

Why you may need a metal rack

The metal rack is most often used to store any items, in a production environment they store tools and equipment, in everyday life they are used to store things, household items, blanks for the winter, etc.

Shelves are divided by prefabricated and collapsible. In addition, they are distinguished by capacity.

Such designs can be purchased in a specialized store or do it yourself.

Making metal shelving in the cellar

A metal rack is often installed in the cellar; it is used to store blanks for the winter. Quite often, such structures are made non-separable, that is, assembled using electric arc welding.

Necessary tools and materials

To perform this work, the following items will be required:

  • A sketch, with its help, the amount of necessary material is determined.
  • For the manufacture of a home-made rack, an equal-equal-angle corner is often used, its dimensions are determined in GOST 8509-93. It so happened that structures of this design use angles with measuring shelves from 25 to 50 mm. However, the size of the corner determines the load capacity of the shelf.

The dimensions of the structure are determined based on the size of the place where it will be installed.

Suppose that the length of the rack is two meters, the width of the shelf is located within one meter, the height of the structure lies within 1500 mm. Having performed simple arithmetic operations, you can calculate the number of corners:

To produce one shelf, 7 linear meters of a corner will be required, this length includes two longitudinal corners and three transverse ones. In the finished rack there will be 2 shelves and 6 racks. Total 23 p. M of corner will be required.

To assemble the structure, you need the following set of tools:

  • The welding machine, preferably an inverter, these devices are distinguished by the quality of the seam, for welding you can use electrodes of the brand UONI or MP, with a diameter of 3 or 4 mm. Welding can be carried out at a welding current of 160-200 A.
  • To clean welds from scale, you can use a welding hammer. For cutting a corner into size, an angle grinder with circle diameters of 125 or 180 mm is used.
  • To create shelves, as a rule, planed boards with a thickness of 24-40 mm are used.

IMPORTANT! ANGLES ON WHICH PLACES FOR STORING OBJECTS WILL BE LAYED ARE MUST BE ESTABLISHED THAT ANGLES OF 90 DEGREES WERE CONVENIENT TO A FRIEND. Thus, a place for laying the board will be formed.

And yet, so that the rack does not go into the ground, on vertical supports that will come in contact with its surface, it is necessary to weld square plastics larger than the dimensions of the corner section.

Of course, all work on the assembly of the rack should be carried out using a locksmith angle, with its help control the correct connection of the corners.

Drawings of metal shelving for preservation

It will not be difficult to create working documentation for the independent manufacture of the rack. When developing it, it is important to observe all the dimensions that will be required for the manufacture of the structure. Non-observance of them may lead to the fact that the assembled product does not fall into a specific place for it.

Metal rack assembly diagram

The sequence of operations is approximately as follows.

  1. First, shelves are made, and then racks are attached to them.
  2. It is not recommended to weld the structure right away, initially it is assembled on tacks and only after checking the angles and dimensions can complete seams be made.

How to make a prefabricated metal shelving

For the manufacture of a prefabricated rack, an electric drill, a screwdriver, mounting corners, bolt or self-tapping fasteners and a number of drills will be required. Direct assembly requires the use of wrenches. Allowed the use of keys of any type.

When creating a sketch, it is necessary to determine the connection places of the parts that make up the frame. If bolt fasteners will be used, it is necessary to prepare holes through which the bolts will pass. If the assembly will be carried out using self-tapping screws, then holes will not be required to be drilled. When performing work, it is necessary to constantly use a measuring tool to control the dimensions and angles of connection of parts.

Metal shelves for preservation

For storage of canned workpieces, you can use different materials, wood, metal, polymers.

For the manufacture of metal shelves, you will need a certain amount of corner and sheet. A corner is required for the manufacture of brackets for attaching the finished shelf to the wall. The width of the sheet for the shelf may lie within 300 mm, the length may lie within 600 mm. To assemble the structure, electric arc welding is used.
