The joint of the laminate and linoleum: a step-by-step instruction

Often there are times when we need to stack materials of different heights (linoleum and laminate). In modern times, this is possible thanks to the sills. There are several varieties, so you need to choose, taking into account the characteristics of the coating.

How to dock laminate and linoleum

Sills are needed to dock. They differ from those thresholds that are mounted at the door with their functionality and complexity. The problem concerns not only the fact that it’s hard to do the job efficiently. More joints look ugly. This spoils the interior, because they are very striking.

Reference! It is quite difficult to create a joint between these materials. This is due to the different thickness of the materials (the laminate is thicker than linoleum). Therefore, it is important that the joint is not visible.

There are 2 ways to stack materials:

Align linoleum so that it is flush with the laminate.
Seal the joint using aluminum strips, sills or other elements.

Important points

There are some requirements that the sills must satisfy:

Water resistant. The profiles connecting the joints must be cleaned of water, since it causes deformation and decay.
Resistance to sharp changes in room temperature.
UV protection. If the material has no protection, it will begin to fade when exposed to the sun.
Easy to install.
Durability and wear protection. Profile properties should not change over time.
Mounts should not be visible.
Possibility of joining, regardless of the curvature of the floor.
The ability to process material (for example, cut off excess).
The ability to use the joint, even if the difference in height of the materials is two millimeters.
The bending radius during heating is up to 30 cm, and during cooling up to 60 cm.
The possibility of repair.
An opportunity to mount on already laid coverings.

Single-level joints

If we consider this joint as the most beneficial for the interior, it is considered better. Connections are made using professional moldings and other lining options.

For a single-level joining, it is necessary to lay a material with a high density under the first. Its thickness is approximately equal to the difference between the height of the products. For such cases, plywood (preferably multi-layer) is well suited. For a doorway, this option is better to choose, since it is better to combine materials in this way.

Layered Joints

This option is suitable if it is necessary to level the floor, the height of which has become different, due to the combination of different coatings (linoleum and laminate). For this, special sills were created:

Direct. Allow to join single-level floors.
Transitional. Allow to dock two different levels.
The final ones. Suitable if you need to make out the edges of the coatings.
Corner It will be needed if you need to connect linoleum and stairs.

Fastening sills and straps at the joints

Joints are used using sills and trims. Mounting options are as follows:

Cross-cutting. The connecting profile is applied over the materials. Panels are mounted to the floor using self-tapping screws.
Secret. We use fixing strips, on the back of which there are grooves. The front side is flat. Due to this, you can dock the material by hiding the fasteners. This will allow the transition on the same level.
Use bonding instead of bonding. This method is used less often, since it can only be used in rooms with a low floor load (a large load will damage the joints). You can use glue or liquid nails.
