May sowing carrots: is it worth it?

Regarding the timing of planting this useful vegetable, you can find many opposing opinions. Some people think that it is best to do this in April, others are inclined towards the middle and even the end of May, while others prefer winter sowing in November.

Let's figure it out

Supporters of winter sowing argue this with the fact that carrots sown in autumn cold earlier emerge, are less sick and affected by pests. But it should be borne in mind that an early harvest is unlikely to survive until spring, even in the best storage conditions.

The same applies to the April crop. But if you sow late-ripening varieties in the middle or even the end of May, then the crop will ripen in November. It remains to put it in boxes, fill it with sand and put it in the cellar. Without carrots, you will not be left until the new crop.

In general, there is a simple rule regarding sowing dates: early varieties are planted as early as possible in April, and in the southern regions - even at the end of March, mid-ripening - in early May, and late - in the second half.

Landing Features

If you can’t wait to taste the vitamins, then sow wetted seeds and cover with foil. Carrots sprout slowly, seedlings can be expected for three weeks, or even a month. Pre-soaking the seeds before planting will reduce this period by a week or two or even more.

But even with late sowing, such a technique would be useful. This helps preserve moisture in the soil, and even in drought your beds will not be affected.

Carrots are planted in grooves up to 2 cm deep, at a distance of 1.5-2 cm from each other, leaving aisles 15-

30 cm. The later the variety you plant, the greater the distance between the rows.

IMPORTANT! When thinning, in no case do not leave the pulled out plants near the beds, their smell attracts pests. Tops can be put in salad or added to soup. Many people like it.

What do you like carrots

Carrots love light soils, even in sand, but at the same time they need to be provided with sufficient nutrition. Humus, compost, peat will significantly increase the yield. And with mineral fertilizers, you need to be very careful, so potassium salt, potassium chloride, as well as complex fertilizers containing this element that is detrimental to carrots, will definitely not bring benefits.

Caution should be taken with nitrogen fertilizers. If in spring or June their use is justified, then in August such a fertilizer will only lead to rapid growth of greenery to the detriment of root crops, and also reduce their stagnation.

Superphosphate can be added, but better in spring. But preference should be given to organics. It grows especially well in the garden, into which manure was introduced 1-2 years ago.

Does not like this vegetable and acidic soils. If the acidity of the soil is large, then add lime, dolomite flour or ash. Carrots are especially responsive to ashes rich in trace elements. In addition, it repels carrot flies and other pests.
